But I like Porsche too; and there is absolutely no way on this planet that the Mustang is in the same buyers market or cross-shop with the Porsche 911; even if it is faster in a drag race.

GT: 460hp/420lb_ft with a 0-60 under 4 seconds with drag mode and 10-speed auto
EB: 310hp/350lb_ft with a 0-60 under 5 seconds with drag mode and 10-speed auto
Lemme put it in this perspective: if I have the money to choose between a 991.2 and a Mustang GT, you bet your ass I’ve already got a 718 Cayman S spec’d out and ready to order.
The new Ford Mustang: Coming to a Cars and Coffee faster than before; and not in Grabber Blue.

Spinning out after a Cars and Coffee faster than before...

If the European market is to be believed, the Mustang, 911, and M3 are all cross-shopped pretty regularly. I think there’s more a novelty effect over there. In the US, I don’t see this happening much because we’re less practical and more image-conscious. $0.02

I like your answer.

If I had the money to choose between a new 911 and a 2018 Mustang, I’d take the 911 in a heartbeat. The new Mustang doesn’t look great.

I think the tax on engine displacement and the 5.0 Coyote make the two cars comparatively priced.

I’d rather have the Mustang.

I know a few EU nations (and the UK, IIRC) have shifted their taxes entirely from displacement to CO2 measurements, so I’m not sure if that still holds up across the board. But good thinking.

ehh. Everything I’ve heard, at least about the UK, is that they’re much more image conscious than us.

Maybe in their dreams, but the proliferations of mediocre diesel hatchbacks and wagons (to me) tells a different story. For sure they’re more class-defined, but in the US our class mobility in some ways has been our undoing. So I guess it depends on how you’re looking at it. Maybe “We use things to define our status, they use things that align with their status.” for lack of a more quotable way to say it.
They love the Mustang the same way we’re like “Yeaaaah, bring the Ford Transit here!” and British people think we’re all crazy. Green grass.

We had an opponaut right here not too long ago that legitimately cross shopped a GTI with A Challenger.
Market segments are only a convenience to the buyer, not a wall, not a stop sign, not a walled garden. Real people are not going to balkanize themselves out of options they want. They’re going to cross shop what they want and buy what they like, segments be damned.
Is anyone cross shopping a 911 with a Mustang? Better question; is the person who does that going to check automotive forums beforehand to make sure they’re ‘doing it right’, even if they’re happy with the set of options they’ve chosen? We all know what the answer to that is.

You’d be surprised at car fans selections K Roll. I also am sure that the Porsche still has the more modern transmission than the Mustang. meaning the Mustang still comes with a manual, yet folks are still buying them.

I would consider a mustang if i lived in europe and everyone didn’t own one.

Probably sort of like having a GTI or Golf R over here...uniqueness goes a long way.

But the Porsche doesn’t have a back seat for SEX!!!
And the Mustang will likely have lower operating costs in North America.
However, in Europe, the way vehicles are taxed will work against the Mustang in terms of operating costs. Fuel is more expensive and the annual taxation will be higher. Also parts and service costs for the Mustang is probably higher in Europe because it isn’t a common vehicle there.

You think the Mustang does??? I’m sorry, WUT?!?

I don’t think it’s that they’re targeting Porsche buyers, but rather potential Mustang segment buyers who would love to say stereotypical Mustang ownery things like, “Ya know, my 5.0 is faster than a Porsche!”
I’d say it’s a pretty excellent selling point, if you look at it that way at least. Especially when the sort of Mustang owner to say such things would presumably have an automatic transmission to begin with.

I can attest to mustangs having room in the back seat, for activities and such.

I think it depends on the year and model. Care to divulge?

More than a 718, I can’t imagine more or less than a 911.
